Titanium (Ti)

Titanium is a light grey metal with low density, high strength and an excellent corrosion and heat resistance. According to the Greek mythology, in 1795 the chemist Heinrich Klaproth named the newly discovered element "Titanium". The extraction is made for example from the minerals Ilmenite, Rutile, Leukoxene or Anatase. Significant resources can be found in Australia, Canada, Brazil, Norway and South Africa.

Significant Characteristics and Applications:
  • excellent corrosion resistance
  • good machinability
  • high ductility, good workability (pure Ti)
  • good weldability
  • light weight
  • Ti-alloys feature with very high strength

Used for tank tubing, piping, heat exchanging devices for the chemical industry, instruments and implants for the medical technology, structural components for aerospace, wear resistant coatings and others.

Important Alloys:
  • Ti Grade 1 – low oxygen content
  • Ti Grade 2 – standard oxygen content
  • Ti Grade 3 – medium oxygen content
